Biotech – Capture of Toxic Molecules of Interest

The Challenge

A yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has been genetically modified to produce C16-C18 fatty alcohol, a valuable product. However, these fatty alcohols are also toxic to the yeast which poses a serious limitation to high titer production.

The Solution

Materium has provided functionalised magnetic MAT540 microspheres to Professor David Stuart from Alberta University. Prof. Stuart included the microspheres in a bioreactor and observed that the fatty alcohols were not detectable in the broth after fermentation; thus, the microspheres captured close to 100% of the fatty alcohol. The fatty alcohol could later be recovered by stripping the microspheres with an organic solvent.
